RAG (retrieval-augmented generation)

Updated Feb 5, 2025

Definition

RAG is a method where a system retrieves sources first, then generates an answer based on those sources.

Plain English

"Look it up, then write." That's the whole idea.

Why it matters

  • It's the reason citations often exist in AI answers.
  • It reduces wrong answers, but doesn't eliminate them.
  • It makes being retrievable and quotable more important.
